Dry eye is a common condition that affects about 16 million Americans and until recently there was no long-term way to treat it.
IRPL: Harnessing the power of light
Intense regulated pulsed light (IRPL) therapy is new effective and long-lasting treatment for dry eye. It works by addressing meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), the most common cause of chronic dry eye. IRPL targets this condition by creating pulsed light and sending it in regulated spurts to help stimulate the meibomian glands. Over time, the gland will function at a more optimal level and the person will experience fewer symptoms of dry eye.
The good news is that IRPL is relatively fast, and patients benefit from a custom approach. Our practice has invested in the technology for specialized IRPL treatment. It’s the first treatment the may potentially regenerate the meibomian gland structure.
How does IRPL work?
You can expect to be seated comfortably in a position that allows your eye doctor to easily access your eyes. For safety, you’ll be asked to put on protective eyewear and an optical gel will be applied to the cheekbone and temporal areas. From here, the IRPL technology will flash a series of 5 flashes under one eye, workings its way from the inner canthus up to the temporal area. This process will be repeated under the other eye.
Afterward, you can expect noticeable improvements in the function of your meibomian glands in a couple of hours. The most dramatic change will be that your eyes will not feel as dry as they used to. You should know that the results depend on compliance with a specific protocol. This protocol consists of 3-4 sessions. The treatment is non-invasive, entirely painless, and harmless to the eye.
