Black beans are an excellent source of protein and fiber and act as a healthy alternative to meat in your diet. The nutrients in black beans maintain good health and fight chronic disease, such as gastrointestinal conditions and diabetes. In particular, diabetic individuals benefit from the protein and fiber contained in black beans because it helps regulate the food digestion process, including the breakdown of simple sugars. Thanks to this slow digestion process, the blood sugar remains more steady, preventing unwanted blood sugar spikes or drops. By maintaining the healthy blood sugar levels recommended by their physicians, diabetic individuals will be at less risk for developing diabetic retinopathy, a potentially blinding retinal eye condition.
