5 Ways to Combat Eye Allergies This Spring
Spring is a beautiful time of year in Indiana and Ohio. The smell of fresh mowed grass, blooming trees and flowers, sunshine and warmer temperatures always gives us a sense of relief that we can finally forget about bitter cold and snow for a few months. However, with spring comes seasonal allergies, which an estimated 50 million people in the United States suffer from. While these allergies may include sneezing, congestion and a runny nose, allergy sufferers can also experience issues with their eyes, like redness, itchiness, constant watering, and swollen eyelids. Eye allergies can be caused by airborne allergens like mold, dust, pet dander and pollen. While eye allergies are common and can’t be prevented, we have five ways to give your eyes some relief.
- Use hypoallergenic concealer if you wear cosmetics and draw attention elsewhere if you have red, puffy eyes. Wear a fun shade of lipstick and don’t cover up with heavy makeup.
- Sunwear can help keep pollen out of your eyes, as well as using your air conditioning unit and keeping the windows closed in your home.
- Try over-the-counter eye drops or talk to your optometrist about prescription drops. Decongestant drops shrink the blood vessels in your eyes, which can ease the redness. Also, antihistamines relieve the itch.
- Spring clean your home. Mold can be a factor in eye allergy issues. Clean your damp rooms {kitchen, bathrooms, basement} and use a dehumidifier to keep moisture out of the air.
- Don’t rub! Take out your contact lenses, skip the makeup all together, apply cool compresses to your eyes, and wash your hands often. Rubbing can cause the itch to become worse!
